Coolerado’s Five Ton Rooftop Cooler Wins Challenge

August 26th, 2009

The devner based companies, Coolerado Corp, has won this years UC Davis Western Cooling Challenge. The UC Davis challenge was originally designed to aid manufacturers in making better, more energy efficient air purifiers and commercial retailers to get new information about the units.

Coolerado were announced winners after federal tests came back about their entry, the H-80 five ton commercial rooftop cooling system. The federal tests found that the rooftop unit overall uses over 50% less energy than a conventional cooling system.

The test were done at the HVAC Lab at the US Government’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the results came as a surprise to many people. The director of the UC Davis challenge, Mark Modera, originally believed that the H-80 unit would only save 40% energy compared to standard units. However, the test results found that the 5 ton air con unit actually uses a massive 80% less energy.

The Coolerado H-80 rooftop cooling unit has been designed for use on commercial buildings such as shops and office blocks. Just one of the H-80 units can cool around 3000 square feet of floor space, definately alot more than a standard ceiling fan.

No doubt with this announcement, many companies will be looking to buy the new H-80 air conditioner in an attempt to improve their green image. Air conditioners and HEPA air purifier units is one of the biggest items that environmentalists have problems with because they are generally seen as a luxury. Now with this news, the H-80 will become very popular with both the customers and retailers. Although I suspect many customers don’t really consider what’s keeping the store cool and refreshing.

The good news and publicity so far has been mainly for Coolerado, however, this could soon change. Coolerado aren’t the only company to submit their cooling units and more test results are expected later in 2009. We’ll have to wait to see if any of them beat the H-80.
