Tracking Your Assets Has Never Been Easier With RFID
August 8th, 2009Over the past 10 years, the development of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has grown to help companies in every industry track down and manage their fixed assets UK. However, RFID is still not completly optimised for use. Currently the technology is too expensive and is only really used at the manufacturer level or on more expensive products. The ideal use of RFID would be to track individual items off the shop shelves.
RFID is very similar to barcodes, it’s a form of tracking items. A barcode uses a tagging system that stores information which is then read by a scanner. An RFID tag is a chip that can be accessed remotely using an RFID reader, it stores data about the item it’s attached to and then sends it to the reader. The RFID reader uses radio waves to read the data off the chip regarding the asset.
Unfortunately, asset tracking UK hasn’t really reached this sort of level, however a large number of industries in the US have already started using the technology. New passports, public transport payment methods, libraries and museums are just a few of the services that use the RFID tags. A large number of the companies using this tracking method are government funded.
Many companies do understand why RFID is so good, however, they haveb’t invested in it. In more recent years, the importance of tracking your assets has become vital. However, all companies knwo that auditing their assets slows down business. Some companies find that several months after auditing, they have missed a large amount of their assets.
By implementing RFID tags onto the majority of your assets, you can track and read hundreds of your items all at the same time. This makes managing your assets a whole lot simpler.
One example of where RFID have become useful is in a Unilever factory. They have taken over 20,000 items on their production line and added the RFID tags. These tags mean that the company can audit their items remotely, avoiding having to shut down the production line for a manual audit.
This is just one example where RFID tracking can help your business and avoid you loosing money. There are a wide range of examples. Another example is in the fire service, they can track equipment to save vital time. It also makes sure that unequipped vehicles don’t go to the scene of an accident.
However, currently tracking using RFID is not cheap. With the more advanced tags costing around $50, tracking your assets efficiently is not check. Hopefully the costs of the tags will fall as the money needed to develop them does. Once more industries adopt this method of asset tracking, fixed asset register UK programs will become more advanced.
