June 9th, 2009All dragon owners need to know a few things about caring for a bearded dragon. One of these things is brumation. During the winter months, bearded dragons usually brumate or hibernate. Many new owners mistakenly think their dragon is sick when this happens. However, some beardies choose not to brumate. Owners should know a couple of things about brumation in bearded dragons. This article will discuss some of these things.
Activity
You should already know by now that all dragons don’t brumate. Even those that do sometimes show signs of life. If your beardie is up and about, you can offer him a little food. Avoid giving him too much food though. The excess food won’t be digested if he goes back into brumation.
Burrowing
It’s common for dragons to bury themselves during this period. Try to provide an area for this in his habitat. Aspen shavings are great to use for this area.
Heat
Dragons are used to having less heat in the winter time. Leading up to winter, it’s best that you decrease the temperature gradually. The temperature should be btween 75 and 85 degrees during the day. Although dragons can be kept in temperatures in the 50s, it’s best that you don’t let the temperature drop below 60 degrees at night. You can slowly increase the temperature back to normal after winter.
Light
As you have already learned, dragons go into brumation during winter. Therefore, you should try to imitate the natural light cycle. You can achieve this by slowly reducing light until it’s between eight and ten hours a day. This will ease him into brumation. After winter has passed, you should gradually increase the light back up to 14 hours a day.
