How To Tell The Sex Of Your Bearded Dragon
June 30th, 2009Most dragon owners want to know their pet’s gender. Owners of younger lizards will likely have a difficult time though. You will have to wait until dragons are a little older before trying to tell.
You should be able to tell your dragon’s gender when he’s a few months old. There are a few differences between male and female dragons that you can look for. This article will discuss how to determine the sex of bearded dragons.
Femoral Pores
Rows of bumps called femoral pores are located beneath your dragon’s thigh. Females tend to have very small pores. If you have a male dragon, he will have larger femoral pores.
Head
Another difference that you can check on is with the head. The heads of females is usually narrow and pointy. A male dragon will have a broader and larger head. Although, the heads can sometimes be a similar size, so this method isn’t always the most accurate.
Bulge
One of the best ways is to look at the underside of your beardie’s tail. Dragons usually have one or two bulges just above the vent. Males have two distinct bulges. If there is only one bulge, you probably have a female. However, sometimes a male will appear to have only one bulge. Some dragons don’t even have one.
Tail
One of the final methods used to sex bearded dragons is to look at the base of the tail. You may have a male if the base of the tail is thick. The base of females is usually more slender than that of their male counterparts.
