Should I Learn A Foreign Language?
July 15th, 2009Could I learn a foreign language?
Learning a foreign language can be very exciting ,but many students find themselves falling by the wayside too early .A student starts off determined to succeed , spends long hours in the books or listening to audio programs but soon the student`s brain becomes clogged and discouragement sets in. I am sure that many of us can identify with this. We watch our friends speak fluently or maybe we have a job in the Airline Industry so we get excited.
Why does this happen ?…..because there is no clear reason why they want to learn the language in the first place. The question a person should ask themselves is ” why do I need to learn this language”. This is crucial because it determines which areas the student would need to focus their efforts on.Take for example an South African guy who wants to travel to Spain .He would want to learn Spanish right?, but which areas should interest him most?….he`ll need to learn phrases which relates to travelling, basic greetings, staying at the hotel, ordering at a restaurant,a few phrases that he can converse with the taxi driver, a bit of the slang, etc. With that being the case, he has no need to concentrate on the technical construction of the phrases he will be using. Why kill yourself studying preterite and imperfect tenses when you might only have a very short time to learn it?. In this case he`ll be better off using books for Spanish travellers.
This scenario changes however for the guy who wants to learn an unfamiliar language to use it as his secondary language. He would need to get a bit more involved with the language. It is necessary for him to learn proper grammar, spelling and pronunciation. My advise is,”chose the reason why you need the language first”. This would determine which program is best suited for you and ensure your success with whatever program you decide to embark upon.
